Great Furniture Ideas for Small Spaces!

Not everyone lives in a big house with lots of square footage. You may live in a studio apartment, small condo, townhome, or even just a smaller single family home.  And even if you do live in a bigger home, you may have a room or two that aren’t all that roomy (sorry, pun intended). Seven’s a lucky number so read on for seven big furniture ideas for small places.

7 Furniture Ideas for Small Spaces:

1. Highboy Dresser: Obviously by its name, you can determine a highboy dresser is taller than your average chest of drawers. They are often a combination of bigger and smaller drawers.  They come in many different styles and can be used in more rooms than just a bedroom.

2. Nesting Tables: Again, as the name suggests, these are usually sold as set of three tables but can be two or four. They are designed biggest to smallest so when they aren’t in use, they nestle one under the other. This is a great option for a small living room or den to give you terrific flexibility. If you want to lay out a big project or entertain, simply un-nest and commence!

3. Window Seat: Even small rooms usually have a window or two. Why not take advantage of what is typically wasted space below the window for a built-in window seat or bench? Boom! Turn wasted space into seating AND storage. You’ll find some varieties with lift-up lids and others with drawers. Both can be hazards for little ones, so plan accordingly.

4. Storage Bed: These aren’t just for kids anymore. Many bedframes now offer drawers for underbed storage. Did someone say Ikea? If purchasing something like this isn’t in your budget right now, save some money and buy storage containers made to go under your bed. Get organized and stow those extra linens, shoes, or anything else that tends to clutter your space.

5. Storage Coffee Table: We’ve all seen coffee tables that offer storage inside. A terrific choice for saving space. Another option is a table with storage AND a top that raises to give you eating or working space. Double duty from your coffee table! This may be a perfect choice for a living room, family room or den.

6. Sofa Bed: Lov’em or hate’em, sofa beds should make your consideration list if you’re tight on space. They are absolute beasts to move and don’t always offer the most comfortable night’s sleep, but they do provide great space savings. For those whose living room doubles as a bedroom, sofa beds are a no-brainer. I’ve heard that newer sofa beds are made with modern foam mattresses and are a lot more comfortable than “your father’s sofa bed.” So do your homework and check that whatever you buy has a testing period with a full money-back return policy.

7. Murphy Bed: Whimsical and practical, a murphy bed is basically a bed built into a frame that allows it to close up vertically up against, or sometimes, even into the wall. There are many variations of this clever space-saving piece of furniture. It also can work great in an office/guest room space or in any space that needs to double as a sleeping space.

The Big Takeaway

All of the items I’ve listed have one thing in common: they’re multi-purpose items—the perfect solution any small space challenge. I hope this post gives you inspiration to give your all to your small spaces.
