San Diego Modern Homes Tour 2023

Today’s blog is all about an early birthday gift from my hubby, tickets to the 2023 San Diego Modern Home Tour. He knows just what this birthday girl likes. Beautiful weather. Beautiful homes. Leisurely pace. Lots to see and learn. And one more gift – the opportunity to share the experience with you. I hope you find this secondhand blog tour (blour?) educational and enjoyable.

Before we embark, a word about how the tour is organized. The host company is Modern Architecture + Design Society. MA+DS organizes similar tours in major cities across the nation. At one stop we chatted with one of its leaders, Jamie Leasure, a friendly host who’s passionate about bringing modern design to the public and pursuing MA+DS’ philanthropic activities that support local design students. You can learn more about the company and check for tours in your area by visiting mads.media.

A Well-Designed Tour Design

The homes on the tour were located in different areas of San Diego, which made for a wonderful day of savoring scenery as well as scenic residences. We loved being in complete control of which homes we toured and when we toured them. As an added benefit, one of the homes was nestled two blocks from San Diego’s Mission Bay to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Naturally, we stretched out that stop by delighting our senses spending extra time at both bodies of water.

Another pleasant and surprising feature of the tour was access to the owners and contributing professionals. At our first stop we were led on a firsthand tour of a wonderfully unique garden by the homeowner/gardener (see Home #1 photos for a stunning repurposing of her garden “she shed”). At our last stop we met Jamie and an extremely talented architect, Soheil Nakhshab with Nakhshab Development & Design, on hand to discuss his vision and answer questions about three modern homes, side by side, each with a unique style and personality.

Finally, we were thrilled that photographs were allowed and so here I will give you a small sample of each of the homes.  We received permission at each home to shoot, so without further ado, come along on the tour, won’t you?

Home Tour Photos

Modern Home #1

First stop on the tour! This house was unique in that it used a lot of repurposed materials throughout.
A 1,000 sq. ft cottage sat on this lot until 2014 when the owners began this build.

The living space is open to the kitchen and dining.

There is a large folding NanaDoor off of the living area that opens up wide to the outdoor living area.

The bedroom has great light from the outdoors and opens out to the patio and pool area.

This door that now adorns the owner’s “she-shed” was the door to the original house. How cool is that?!

 Modern Home #2

This home is located about two blocks from the ocean on one side and about a half a block from Mission Bay on the other side.

I always say what’s old becomes new again and that is true with this glass block wall. Lot of privacy but lets in great light.

I was totally enamored by this textured tile! It’s such a cool and unique look.

Because I wanted you to see the texture!

The primary bedroom has two large NanaDoors that open onto a balcony with a view of the Pacific.

 Modern Home #3

This home is nestled in the canyon and although it’s right in the middle of the city, you would never know it.

Done with a very open concept feel to the main floor living area and lots of windows letting in lots of great light.

The kitchen is right in the middle of the main living area but is completely open. Such a great feel and perfect for entertaining.

The ultimate man-cave! What you can’t see in this photo is the full bar located on the other side. I had to drag hubby out of this room!

Because it’s a more urban setting, it isn’t a large lot but the architect was still able to include a lap pool with a whirlpool for the ultimate outdoor experience.

 Modern Home #4

As you can see from this photo, this home features a lot of gorgeous wood throughout, including this amazing over-sized front door!

Calm and serene was how I felt standing in this living room. Absolutely understated beauty!

Complete indoor-outdoor living thanks to the two large NanaWalls off of the living area.

Indoor and outdoor living seamlessly combined.

A gorgeous primary bedroom complete with amazing views from the floor to ceiling windows!

 Modern Home #5

A lovely, understated main living area with great outdoor access.

A very modern piece fits in really well with the decor of this beautiful home.

A primary bath with a very pampered, retreat feel. Lovely.

A calm spot to have a nice soak at the end of the day.

A great outdoor space that takes full advantage of the gorgeous greenery surrounding the home.

Final Thoughts After the Last Tour Stop

I’m a sucker for open houses and home tours. I find them endlessly interesting and inspiring to see all the creative ways people choose to love where they live. The aesthetics are always wonderful and I also enjoy seeing the strategy behind the designs – different ways people develop to make their homes functional to best serve their needs. These homes were all beautifully done and it was so much fun to get to see inside and out! Thanks again to MA+DS, the homeowners, designers and architects. We will definitely be looking to join the tour for years to come.

Now, what will you do next to love where you live?
