Colors for Life – A Fun Case Study

If you love a color, is it possible to keep it for life? The answer is yes, even if it’s a color you’ve loved since childhood. Today’s blog provides a couple of simple case studies to show you how.

Let’s start with pink. Pink and white is a common color combination for an infant or young child. We see it all the time. Soft, girlie, adorable.

Now imagine that same little girl in her teens. She still wants pink but she’s no baby anymore. She wants a more grown-up look. How? Here’s one idea. Deepen the pink, add a second accent color of warm gray, keep the white and voila! Suddenly the pink color scheme has a more mature feel to it. It’s still fun and girlie but a little more sophisticated.

Going forward in time now, imagine an adult woman who wants pink in her home but doesn’t want it to feel young or babyish. Take that pink and lighten it way up so it's almost a neutral. Keep the white and add a bold dark contrast color, like black. All grown up. The pink becomes a beautiful background color, the black pops against the pink and white. It now has a very adult, almost an art deco feel.

Next let’s go to the other side. Baby blue is soft, comforting, and restful. A great color for the nursey. Pair it with a soft white and you have a great color combo for your little one.

Fast forward and your teenage boy wants a more adult feel to his room, but he still loves blue. Take that baby blue, deepen it to a nice navy, keep the white, and add a warm gray accent. You’ve created a blue color scheme that’s more mature.

Moving on to an adult option. Take the blue and do what we did with the pink. Lighten it to the point it’s almost a neutral. Keep the soft white and contrast with a bold black accent. Now it’s a stunning adult color scheme.

This concept works will with most colors. The bottom line is you should never feel a certain color is off limits because of your age. There’s always a way to adapt a color and keep it in your life!
