Flow and what it means in the world of interiors…

We hear it discussed on our favorite HGTV shows, we even read about it in Better Homes & Gardens and Architectural Digest.  Everybody who talks about interior design/redesign talks about flow; but what exactly is it?

Flow can be the natural line your eyes follow when you walk into a room and take in the whole space.  It can also represent the style and color choices that make a room feel cohesive and well put-together.  Let’s now consider a third, more expanded definition for flow:  the style and color choices from room to room that create a cohesive, well put-together feel throughout those rooms that may continue and even encompass your entire home.  Let’s now go over some tips to help you manage the flow in your home.

Tips for Managing Flow

1. Consider whether you are redesigning just one room or if this is the first of several rooms in your makeover plans.  If you are doing more than one room and they have a relationship to one another like your primary bedroom and the en suite bathroom, you will want to consider both spaces together as you choose colors, styles, finishes etc.

2. Think about your color choices as you plan your new space.  Choosing colors that play nicely together with the surrounding rooms is a big step toward achieving flow from one room to the next. As an example, you can achieve this with different tones of the same color palette or choose some beautiful complimentary colors from one space to the next.

3. If you are redesigning an open concept space-for instance, if your great room, dining room and kitchen share lines of sight – consider bringing color and style from an existing space, which is already finished in a way that you love, into your new space.  Some examples of this may be bringing the same flooring from one space into the next or selecting accessories or even window treatments that share a similar style or color palette.

Final Thoughts

If you think about the three tips above as you begin your next redesign project, you will be well on your way to achieving a perfect flow throughout your home and every time you come home, you will be greeted by a feeling of calm and appreciation for your beautiful new space!
