Lighting Choices In Your Home
Only some homes are lucky enough to have natural lighting in abundance. And all homes have to rely on artificial light -- at least during nighttime hours. Okay, settle down, Alaska. We know, we know. Almost everyone needs to plan for artificial lighting in their space, and this blog will help you understand lighting basics so you can wisely plan for this important and often overlooked design element.
Four Interior Lighting Types
1. Ambient Lighting. If you want to cast light throughout an entire room or space, ambient lighting is your friend. While natural lighting fits within the ambient category, so do ceiling fixtures like can lights and chandeliers. If possible, include ambient lighting throughout your home. You may want specialized lighting too, but if you’ve ever had a room without ambient light, you’ve undoubtedly grown to appreciate the flexibility of a well-lit room.
2. Accent Lighting. Want to highlight a specific feature like a beautiful piece of artwork or a beloved collection in your cabinet or hutch? Simply turn to accent lighting. Think downlights or track lights that you can aim wherever you would like.
3. Task Lighting. When you think of activities and functionality, think task lighting. Want to read? You need task lighting. Have to work? You need task lighting. Cooking a fancy meal? You need task lighting. Dogs need to go potty and looking for the doggie door? You definitely need task lighting. No matter the activity, you’ll find a specialized light to make performing your task easier.
4. Decorative Lighting. This final type of lighting adds style and personality to a space. You might set a shadowy mood by uplighting your floor plants. You might class up a room with elegant wall sconces. You might add fun and function with pendant lights. Or you might introduce that lava lamp to your bedroom. No judging.
Final Thoughts
As a rule of thumb, you create flexibility if you rely on various lighting “layers” in your home to meet the many moods and activities that combine to make a house a home. Take care of your main needs first, but don’t skimp on fun options. Life’s short. Light it up!
