Wall Painting Tips & Tricks

If you know me or have read my blogs for any significant time, you know that I proudly consider myself to be a paint fanatic. I preach the gospel of paint. So what’s the best and most affordable way to completely change the feel of a room? Say it with me, brothers and sisters……PAINT! And if I were running for president on the paint platform of the paint-ocratic party – someone should really do that – you can be assured that “I approve of this message.”

As a longtime paint proponent, I’ve logged many hours, and square feet, of vertical space enhancement. I’m happy to share some of my favorite tips and tricks to help you step up your paint game.

TIPS & TRICKS FOR A PERFECT PAINT JOB:

1. Paint in dry weather.

This one can be tricky depending on how unpredictable the weather is where you live. However, painting when it’s humid or wet outside can mean longer drying times so try to “stay dry” if you can.

2. Prepare your walls.

Before you start painting, fill nail holes, make any needed repairs to the walls, and wipe them down thoroughly. Dust will ball up in your paint and will not look great when the paint dries. While you’re at it, take time to remove all outlet and switch covers for faster painting and better results.

3. Use the right tools for the job.

There are many different types and sizes of rollers and brushes and they all serve a slightly different purpose. For instance, the nap of rollers are designed for various wall textures. If you’re unsure which type you need, ask for help at the paint counter. You’ll also find a plethora of brush types with a wide range of price points. Do your research based on your project, and, again, if unsure ask for help.

4. Cover up or move anything important from the splatter zone.

This one seems obvious, but plenty of people try to cut corners and end up with paint splatter on their sofa or rug. Not fun! Be sure to have plenty of drop cloths (more than what you think you’ll need) to completely cover your floor and drape over big items you don’t want to move. The old “scoot to the center and cover” is a solid tactic.

5. Like drop cloths, get more paint than you think you will need.

This may sound wasteful but trust me, you want to have plenty of paint on hand, especially if you’re having a color mixed. Even though you may know the brand and color and could get more mixed later, color can vary slightly any time it’s mixed at the paint store. You’ll also benefit from having paint left over for future touchups.

TIP: If you’re painting multiple rooms or a very large space, consider getting the five-gallon size. This will help ensure you’re getting a uniform color and often, especially in spring, you’ll find sale prices and might save some money.

6. Don’t scrimp on your paint quality.

A lot of folks make this mistake. You want to save money so you use an off brand of paint. I’ve found that most always any savings you think you’re receiving gets wiped out because you need more coats to get good coverage. Plus, remember that time is money, and more coats of cheaper paint means less time for more fulfilling activities…like drinking wine.
