5 Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Powder Room
As a redesign consultant, I get many questions about kitchens, family and kid spaces, and primary suites. Recently, the little-thought-of powder room has grabbed some attention. Way to go, tiny but mighty PR! You are one of the rooms guests see the most, and you deserve love, too. In this post, I’ll share easy upgrades to give your PR more pizazz, helping it feel more lux with little fuss or muss – and with little impact to your budget.
Five Easy Upgrade Ideas for Your Powder Room
1. Paint. I know, paint is my number one answer for many design-related questions. When in doubt, paint! Again, as far as bang for your buck, you simply cannot beat a fresh coat of paint. It makes old look new; it makes dirty and marked up look clean and fresh. It has the power to brighten dark and small spaces. It also adds personality. And since most powder rooms are on the tiny side, your cost and time requirements will be low.
2. Add a second layer to your walls. In addition to overall wall painting, consider creating an accent wall – via paint, stencils, wallpaper, or fun finishes or textures – for added interest and luxury. I’ve had success adding a contrasting painted stripe around walls around the room, about mid-way or around the top as a border to introduce interest. Getting creative with molding is another way to upgrade the overall look.
3. Change or add cabinet hardware. Depending on the time your home was built, you may have no hardware on your bathroom cabinets. However, even without existing hardware, you should consider adding it for a new look. And replacing hardware is a simple DIY project that can really bring a PR to life. From high-end to casual. Vice versa, and everything in between. Again, since PRs are small, your cost and time are minimal. Think of hardware like jewelry for your room. You know how the right piece of jewelry can totally “make” your look come to life. The same is true for your room.
4. Switch your mirror. Your home may have a big sheet of mirror covering most of the wall over the sink. Sound familiar? This creates a perfect opportunity to remove it (be very careful) and swap in a more modern version. Ikea and similar stores have lots of mirrors at very affordable prices. You’ll be surprised how much impact this change can make to a room’s overall look!
5. Finishing touches. This is fun stuff you can search for over weeks or months. Have fun whenever you shop seeking out the “perfect” soap dispenser, the “most beautiful” towel set, or a spectacular candle or vase. Your mom may have put out the plushy towels for guests and kept “everyday” towels for family use. That’s fine, but don’t you deserve a little plush in your life? Accessories allow you to easily add an extra dimension: colors. Any colors that make your heart sing. You can experiment, explore, and change your mind whenever your heart and wallet tell you it’s time.
Powder rooms are fun to redesign because they’re small. You can achieve quick and rewarding results in no time at all. PRs have the potential to become beautiful spaces that make your guests, and family, feel at home.
Now, what will you do next to love where you live?
