What’s New in Design for 2023?

Warmer jewel tones, gold finishes, heritage tiles, and trim on our draperies. I love to see what’s becoming the “new look” for the upcoming year. Trends often reach back in time. In other words, “what was once old is now new again.” For those who lived through trends earlier in life, it can feel comforting to see some of them get a reboot for today’s lifestyle. However, some trends – I’m talking to you orange shag carpet and neon green draperies—feel free to stay in the past. The majority of us agree that once was enough.

Here are trends I’ve spotted so far for 2023 that may make it on to your consideration list as you plan your next year projects:

1. Wall Sconces. This can be a great way to warm up a space, highlight a feature wall, or add some much-needed lighting to a space without taking up valuable real estate on the furniture or your floor space. With so many great fixtures available, the lights themselves can become a feature and focal point. Gold-toned metal is popular, and what better way to bring that look into your space than with a couple of beautiful wall sconces.

2. Natural Warm Stone Finishes: This beautiful look can enhance a shower stall, kitchen sink, counter, or even flooring. The downside can be cost. To add the warmth of this great look without breaking the bank, you could bring feature stone finishes into a hallway through a great shelf on the wall of your entry or as a tabletop on an accent table.

3. Jewel-Tone Color Schemes: My favorite way to change up a look is with paint and accessories. You can completely redo a space in your home for very little money, and jewel tones are so pretty. Gorgeous, lush, deep greens, reds, and blues. Wow, I can see it now! Choose a color you love and paint the room or even just an accent wall. Add beautiful complementary pillows, candles, or vases for an extra touch. Remember that spray paint is your affordable best friend that offers a way to reuse what you already have.

4. Warm Gold Finishes: Think of it as adding some warm bling to your space. Whether through light fixtures, vases, candle holders, or even wallpaper. It’s super easy to do and again, don’t forget about spray paint. For a few bucks per can, you can add as much warm, gold bling to your room as you like!

5. Heritage Tiles: Though not new in the design world, the availability of so many different colors and patterns are amazing now. Perhaps you’ve been wanting to change out your backsplash or your entryway flooring. If that’s too much, you could start smaller with beautiful coasters or new tabletop for an accent table that could use some updating.

These style trends lend to a warm, approachable, livable luxury. We want that pampered yet livable feel. The “come on in, kick your shoes off and relax” feel. Since we are welcoming people back into our homes, these trends help us create a welcoming vibe.

Closing reminder: Decorate your home with the look and feel you love, regardless of what the current trends are. Your home should always reflect your tastes and preferences since you are the one who lives there. I’m glad to play a role in helping create a look you love, trendy or not, with a healthy dose of practicality and affordability. So discover what you want to create for 2023 and go for it!
