5 Tips To Bring More Outdoors Into Your Home

We open our windows to let in the breeze. We love to display fresh flowers. We hang photos depicting nature. We introduce natural elements like wood and stone. And we create views so we can sit in our homes and be inspired by the great outdoors. Clearly, we love to bring the outdoors in. So, in this blog, I’ll provide tips to do just that, whether your home is an apartment, condo, town home or traditional single family home.

If you happen to live in an RV, you’re on your own. However, I have a hunch that connecting with nature is probably not your challenge.

Five Outside In Ideas:

1. Pull colors seen through your windows. Maybe you have a big, beautiful tree outside your window, or a wild grass field behind your house. Maybe you can spot a pretty flower bed from your bedroom window. If you can see something from your window that inspires you, capture those colors and bring them in. You can do this through fabric choices, paint colors, or accessories. Take photos to help you match colors when shopping in person or online.

2. Let the view in. If you’re fortunate to have a lovely view from a window or two, let that view in. Take advantage the visual treat by treating your window as a frame around nature’s art. Consider minimal or no window treatments to maximize the view. Nature is providing you with a gift, so make the most of it by letting that view shine through!

3. Make your artwork. Choose artwork that features colors or subject matter representing scenes of nature and outdoor objects you love. Are you an ocean, lake, or mountain person? Reflect that in your choices and create Zen-like reminders of your outdoor happy places. Choosing artwork that reflects these things whether it’s actual images or abstracts that contain your favorite natural colors can be a great way to bring the outdoors in.

4. Maximize mirrors. If you have a great outdoor view, why not duplicate the experience? By strategically placing a large mirror where it can reflect that very image, you can more than double your enjoyment by creating new vantage points throughout your home.

5. Don’t settle for imitations. Tips 1 through 4 are great indirect methods to bring in the outdoors into your home. However, you may be able to pursue a more direct method: Get some stuff and bring it in. Think beautiful rocks, branches, pinecones, plants etc.  Have fun travelling around your neighborhood or region searching for those perfect items you can display in your home. This can be a free and easy option that you can repeat in different seasons.
