The Redesign Blog
The Tale of Frankenpot
When writing blogs, typically one finds little opportunity to write Mwhah, hah hah! In this case I feel justified as I am about to describe to you, dear reader, the Tale of Frankenpot. Mwhah, hah hah! (If you just imagined an eerie castle flashing in the night sky by a massive lightning strike, kudos to you.) Caution: If the drama of this tale overwhelms you at any point, please pause your reading and return once your heart has returned to its normal rhythm. Warning: This story starts out scary; however it resolves to a happy, and I think quite lovely, ending. Read on. If you dare!
Understanding Home Interior Floor Plans
An interior floor plan is a two-dimensional rendering of a home’s interior – from a full house, partial section or simply a single room layout. It can be used to define everything from architectural features such as doors and windows down to the smallest accessories like tiny pillows for poodles. Okay, that may be stretching it a bit! Read on to gain a basic understanding of interior floor plans.
5 Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Powder Room
As a redesign consultant, I get many questions about kitchens, family and kid spaces, and primary suites. Recently, the little-thought-of powder room has grabbed some attention. Way to go, tiny but mighty PR! You are one of the rooms guests see the most, and you deserve love, too. In this post, I’ll share easy upgrades to give your PR more pizazz, helping it feel more lux with little fuss or muss – and with little impact to your budget.
Avoid 3 Common Mistakes When Choosing Colors
Imagine hearing the following sentence in the deep baritone of dramatic movie announcer guy: “In a world where colorless homes dominate America’s residential landscape, a hero emerges from the world of interior design who chooses colors with confidence, banishing forever the scourge of the bland beige box.” You can be that hero. You can bring color into your home like a kick-butt chromo warrior! Half of the battle is learning the three color-choosing mistakes you must avoid and how to solve them.
Read on, chosen one. Read on.
7 Fun Facts About Color
Roy G. Biv, remember him? He typically spells his name and, in all caps, smashed together: ROYGBIV. He was the fellow you were likely introduced to in elementary school or through a kids TV show as a way to remember the seven colors of the rainbow (light spectrum) red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Not only is that a fun way for kids to remember the rainbow, it works for adults, too!
Since I’ve already hit on the topics of seven and fun and color, I’m going to keep things rolling today and share seven fun facts about color. The world could use more fun and color these days.
The Difference Between Circulation and Flow in Interior Design
Circulation and Flow. Two common interior design concepts. So what do they mean and how do they differ? They are easy to confuse and often used interchangeably by mistake – most notably when using both circulation and flow to describe circulation. Confused? Read on and you’ll be referencing and articulating “circulation” and “flow” with ease.
Five Popular Design Styles Defined
With each passing year, it seems more home interior “design styles” are added to an already long list. Will you be well served by, or even remember, the main design features of Urban Skandi Post-Modern Industrial Chic? I’m guessing not. So let’s bring it back to the basics. Read on for basic definitions and images of basic home interior styles. This foundation will help you determine which main styles you like and don’t like. That understanding can help you explore related options to nail down a style – or two or three – to help you express your unique personality.
Lighting Choices In Your Home
Only some homes are lucky enough to have natural lighting in abundance. And all homes have to rely on artificial light -- at least during nighttime hours. Okay, settle down, Alaska. We know, we know. Almost everyone needs to plan for artificial lighting in their space, and this blog will help you understand lighting basics so you can wisely plan for this important and often overlooked design element.
The Tale of the $5 Hutch
I love thrifting! Especially when it leads to stories like the one I’m about to share – The Tale of the Five Dollar Hutch. Sometimes lady luck shines on you, and you find such a great piece at such a great price you can barely believe it. In the first stroke of luck, I was actually thrifting for a client seeking a hutch for her business to add extra storage. I decided to check the Habitat for Humanity Restore close to where I live, another lucky stroke, and it turned out better than imagined. They were having a liquidation sale that day to get rid of extra inventory. After finding the right hutch more my client, I saw this little beauty in the parking lot…
Choosing a Non-Traditional Neutral Color for Your Interior
Let’s consider the modest neutral color palette. Common neutral colors include tan, white, taupe, grey, beige and greige (the popular grey/beige combo). And contrary to the theory that low levels of saturation define a neutral, some would argue that deep charcoal or even black are neutrals despite their intense saturation. While you won’t find a neutral color on a color wheel, you will find color wheel colors used to create neutrals. And if you’ve seen my videos, you may have heard me speak of a “neutral blue or green.” So just what the heck is a neutral and why should you care about them?! Read on to find out more!

Interiors Are Going Green in 2024
Last week I shared my thoughts on trending colors for 2024. This week we’re jumping in to one of biggest overall trends in the world of design: sustainability. Since The Redesign Habit is all about “RE” concepts – repurposing, recycling, reusing, redesigning, and reimagining – the increased focus on sustainable interior design is a great fit that I wholeheartedly support! And the good news is there are now even more products and ideas to help us accomplish that goal. So let’s talk a little bit about what some of those options might be.
